STARS ON THE BRAZOS ATTENDS 2009 MARDI GRAS GALVESTON

  The Stars on the Brazos Krewe recently held their fifth annual Mardi Gras party at the Roofgarden Balcony on the Strand in Galveston.   This was a two day event held on Feb. 13-14.  The Stars on the Brazos Krewe is the only Krewe representing Brazoria County in Galveston.    This year’s party was the largest and best on the Strand. 

  There are eight original and twenty at-large members of the group that was founded in 2004.  The eight founding members are Tammy Greenville, Susan Greenville, Vivian Alford, Jaimee Howarth, Staci Walden, Shane Walden, Steve Alford, and David Howarth.  The Krewe has incorporated as a nonprofit and is a 501 (c ) 3 organization.  The event is a fundraiser with proceeds going to local nonprofit organizations in the Brazosport area. 

  The event is a two day party with dinner served three times and drinks provided.  This year’s themes were “Support the Troops” on Friday night and “Valentines Day” on Saturday.  Music was provided by Digital Mayhem, with Darryl Khoury as the DJ.  The best aspect of the balcony is the vantage point to throw beads from above.  Total attendance this year was 275.

  As in years past, the Krewe and many attendees stayed at the Harbor House Hotel.  This is located within walking distance of the Strand. 

  This year’s Mardi Gras was particularly important as it seemed to help Galveston get back to normal following Hurricane Ike.  Many of the businesses still are closed, yet opened for this event.  It is estimated that over 250,000 people attended the week and half long Mardi Gras season.
